BEATSPOKE WINS IT!
Beatspoke are our New Talent Search Winner, beating out hundreds of other artists,". As well as opening the WF Sete on the 2nd of July, they will also get an ableton live 8 license and some studio equipment courtesy of M-Audio. The artists coming 2nd and 3rd will be announced after the festival and will also get some free music equipment. Beatspoke is organic soul and gritty truth. Sub-bass lines and unpredictable beats, melodies and lyrics tell of personal trials, growth and
consciousness in a world that is in dire need of change. DJ Vadim describes it as ¨hard beats, singing, poetry, synth b lines, like a down tempo Bugz in the Attic vs. Spacek vs. guys in Detroit like Wajeed and J Dilla..¨
Yet another great artist has emerged from the creative gene pool of Europe. Spain’s Beatspoke was created from the meeting of American vocalist Sarah Gessler and Spanish producer Josh Fontan and it is the perfect meeting of aggressive future beats and aggressive vocal style. Combining fierce spoken word and seductive vocals with bass heavy broken beat and hip-hop/soul Beatspoke offers a stellar new sound that is sure to have heads nodding in approval. With their debut No Rush, this international duo aren’t holding back, and the world is better because of it.
No Rush works on several levels. For one, vocalist Sarah Gessler channels the revolutionary spirit of Ursula Rucker, using this platform to speak frankly on the state of the world. Like Rucker, her delivery hinges between singing and spoken word, yet each track delivers uncensored truths. On “Reality Lies” Gessler strips the veneer off human complacency with words like “How can we save the world when we’re too busy with me, me, me.” She keeps things strictly spoken word on standout tracks “Midnight Visions” and “We Don’t See” discussing topics like politics, world affairs, and consumer culture. Then there is the production, which is at the forefront of the future soul movement. Incorporating elements of broken beat, hip-hop, jazz, soul and breaks each of the album’s 10 tracks is fresh and exciting. The opening tracks make the biggest impact. Album opener “Everyday” has such an urban feel with its heavy kicks, finger snaps, and persistent percussion that you can just see it being played on the streets of London. But the album highpoint comes in the form of the future soul cut “Dig Deeper” with its deadly deep synth stabs, bouncy vocal delivery, and electro flavor. This is one for the ages.
Progressive, aggressive, and with a strong message Beatspoke is a part of the new wave of future soul artists. Fearlessly melding genres with unparalleled success, they are ones to watch.
