Suncut & Cherrie Flava
Thursday, July 3rd - 8 p.m./3 a.m. - Théâtre de la Mer
With a background deeply rooted in record culture, Suncut's journey has been marked by a dedication to the craft and a commitment to building authentic connections through music. As one of the driving forces behind the Night Dreamer direct-to-disc label, Neal Birnie aka Suncut has played a pivotal role in championing artists and preserving the purity of a one take recording. His infamous Suncut series, an early reissue label unearthing lost and forgotten soul 7” led on to hosting intermittent 'guest list only' parties in and around London.
For over 15 years, Neal has been a familiar face in London's independent music scene. Whether behind the counter at Sounds of the Universe/SoulJazz, working in studios, cutting dub-plates, or meticulously restoring rare records and catalogues in his living room, his openness and positivity has left its mark. As a DJ, his NTS residency - now in its 12th year - boasts a timeless selection of heartfelt soulful jams. With each set, Suncut brings a feel-good approach, embodying the old-school ethos where... "it's about the party, the people, the sound.”
Cherrie Flava is a DJ, label founder, and renowned record collector, shaped by London’s sound system culture, pirate radio, and the city’s underground record store circuit. She cut her teeth at Sounds of the Universe, a cornerstone of London’s music scene, before influencing taste as an A&R at Soul Jazz Records. There, she developed a sharp, discerning ear rooted in Black music and rhythm-driven club culture. Today, through her label MIC (Music Inspires Change) and her monthly show on NTS, she champions innovative sounds from the diaspora. Each set reflects decades of crate-digging, guided by emotion, sonic richness, and a desire to make people dance — all while honoring music’s unifying power.
