On Monday 26 October, Gilles Peterson will be in Paris, at Betino’s Record Shop, for a book-signing event to mark the 20th anniversary of the Worldwide Festival.

The venue was not chosen at random. Located on Rue Saint-Sébastien in the 11th arrondissement, Betino’s is the sort of record shop you pop into just to have a look around, but often end up leaving with a vinyl record under your arm. Soul, funk, jazz, disco, boogie, electronic music: for over twenty years, its bins have been a treasure trove for DJs, collectors and the curious, and Betino himself is counted amongst the most discerning diggers on the vinyl scene. It’s a place that shares the same vision of music as the Worldwide Festival – the kind you seek out, pass on and listen to together.

The book, meanwhile, brings together 256 pages of interviews, photos and previously unpublished anecdotes, told by those who made the festival what it is: artists, staff and festival-goers. Twenty summers at the Théâtre de la Mer, for those who were there and those who wish they’d been.

It’s a chance to bump into Gilles outside Sète, to leave with a signed copy, and to meet some members of the festival team.
